If you have 1,000 different distributions, there will be problems with the basics.

That reason alone is why Linux Mint passed it as most popular. Unity DE is major fail.

I have a copy of Ubuntu with Unity running. I suppose you could use it on a tablet.. The reality is Unity is easy to use for the average Schlub, which makes it useless for a neck beard Trev.

Neckbeards have no money, of course they're not targets.

Oddly, that's not the issue.

I like the fact that if I have a bad file all I need is a internet connection to repair it. I don't need some cd and a access code or someone elses to hack in order to fix it. I like the fact that libre office is built in. I like the fact that software sources is easier to use then regedit.

Windows 7 I think is actually kinda decent...but why pay for software at this point? Yes there are some higher ended products out there. Final Cut Pro on a mac is nearly $1,000 for the software alone.

People who use Final Cut professionally pay Apple to develop software that's reliable, built by people who know their shit. Nobody who relies on software like Final Cut is going to put their budget, reputation and productivity on the line by using open source, free software. Stuff like Final Cut costs $1000 for a reason, and it's the man-hours of research that goes into it.

I spent a couple weeks trying to get Ubuntu running on my desktop. Gave up after several hours trying and failing to figure out why it couldn't find my sound card. Every problem I ran into, there were about 20 different possible explanations for it in the google.

I've done plenty of Unix before and it's less painful than it used to be, but not prime time ready yet.

If you're not able/prepared to fix it yourself, don't get it.

I try it once a year, just to see if it's got any better. In 10 years of trying, I have never managed a clean install with everything working properly.

Going to a forum to look for an answer is hopeless. The answer is always either a link to an 86 page wankfest of nerds trying to impress each other with torturous terminal commands, or some dick telling you it's becuase you;re too dumb.

Yup, maybe I am. So I just reformat and install Windows for another year.

This. On one hand there are plenty of people out there who have generously written up very detailed and informative and clear answers to problems. OTOH I also saw a lot of condescending stupid non-answers like "if you can't figure out how to do XYZ then you're just too dumb for Linux".

FCP is now $299.99.

Our accounting department has already replaced all of their desktop machines with android smartphones. Makes invoicing and receipt-entry a breeze.

We're now upgrading IT and software development to use them exclusively.

Productivity is up 169% over what it was under Winblows.

Why, just last week's P&L report showed that we are actually up $3,000,000,000,000 from where we thought we were.

We here at KNOA software are experts in Android smartphone development. Unless you upgrade to Android smartphones, your business will not last more than three and a half months, etc.

Friend of mine does serious stuff on Linux.

He picks his distro.

He finds the qualified parts list.

He builds the computer from that list.

You can also find shops that sell systems with Linux installed, everything works.

Unfortunately if you just take a computer, download a random distribution, even Ubunto, and install, you have a good chance of at least one problem.

Of course installing an OEM copy of Windows onto a bare computer isn't fun either.
